The IIT brand is powerful, but India has dozens of excellent engineering colleges that produce outstanding engineers and offer strong career outcomes. Here is a guide to the best options beyond the IITs.
NITs — The Underrated Powerhouses
The National Institutes of Technology are among India's finest engineering institutions. NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal, and NIT Calicut consistently rank in the top 20 engineering colleges nationally. JEE Main scores in the 97–99 percentile range are typically needed for the top NITs.
BITS Pilani and Its Campuses
BITS Pilani is arguably the most prestigious private engineering institution in India. Its unique dual-degree programmes, Practice School internships, and strong alumni network make it a compelling alternative to IITs. BITS Goa and BITS Hyderabad are also excellent options.
VIT, SRM, and Manipal
These large private universities have invested heavily in infrastructure, faculty, and industry connections. VIT Vellore and SRM Chennai in particular have strong placement records in IT and core engineering. They are accessible with JEE Main scores in the 85–95 percentile range.
State Government Colleges
Do not overlook strong state government colleges like COEP Pune, VJTI Mumbai, PSG Tech Coimbatore, and Jadavpur University Kolkata. These offer excellent education at a fraction of the cost of private colleges.
Choosing Based on Branch, Not Just College
A Computer Science degree from a Tier 2 NIT will typically outperform a Mechanical Engineering degree from a lower-ranked IIT in terms of placement outcomes in the current market. Choose your branch wisely.
